Toxic To Dogs

Many dog owners share food scraps without realizing the hidden dangers. Beyond creating bad habits—like begging at the table—some everyday items we eat are actually life-threatening for pets. What may seem harmless to us can quickly turn into a serious emergency for them. In fact, human food toxic to dog health can cause digestive issues, poisoning, or worse.

Personally, I never give my dogs human food while I’m cooking or eating. I don’t want them sitting nearby, drooling, and waiting for scraps. The only exceptions I make are adding a raw egg to their meal occasionally, or offering plain yogurt or cottage cheese to a picky nursing mom. These are safe in moderation, but most foods from our plates should stay far away from their bowls.

Let’s face it—dogs are not known for being fussy eaters, at least not most of them. Some dogs will eat anything and everything they can get into their mouth. This isn’t a big problem with many human foods, but there are a few that could be potentially fatal to your dog.

Human food toxic to dogs or can be very harmful to a dog are as follows:

  1. Chocolate (especially dark/ baking chocolate/cocoa powder)
  2. Onions
  3. Garlic
  4. Mushrooms
  5. Nuts & Seeds (While most will only cause discomfort and possible vomiting, seeds such as apple seeds can be fatal)
  6. Any COOKED animal bones (Chicken bones are another hazard to dogs, as are those of turkey and duck. These bones tend to shatter, and the sharp pieces can poke a hole in your dog’s stomach or intestine or get lodged somewhere.)
  7. Fruit pits -like peaches-cherries-apricots
  8. Alcohol-should be obvious but not to everyone!
  9. Artificial sweeteners or products containing them.
  10. Grapes & raisins
  11. Cinnamon
  12. Corn ON THE COB—the COB can be swallowed and become and obstruction that the dogs body is incapable of breaking down or passing

Human foods that should be limited with dogs;

  1. Milk
  2. Citrus fruits (lemons, oranges, limes)
  3. Avocado
  4. Bacon
  5. Kale
  6. Bread
  7. Cheese
  8. Carrots
  9. Berries -seedless
  10. Watermelon
  11. Salmon/sardines – no seasoning on either
  12. Peanut butter
  13. Unsalted Popcorn
  14. Plain yogurt-no artificial sweeteners
  15. Cooked but unseasoned chicken, ham, turkey, pork and fish NO BONES if cooked!

Dogs are known for eating many things a human stomach cannot handle. This, however, does not mean they can eat all a human can. To be safe, make sure foods are not left where your dog can discover them. The most innocent looking item could be the one that harms or even kills your dog. A few minutes of caution can save a lifetime of sadness should you lose your dog.
